post-graduate experience as a university professor, researcher, and laboratory
director. This experience includes pharmaceutical research, forensic
toxicology, environmental toxicology, and environmental health.
Dr. Selim received his BS (honors) and his MS in
chemistry from the University of Cairo (1970 -75). He received his PhD in
Analytical Chemistry from the University of Mississippi, where he also received
post-doctoral training in pharmaceutical research (1976-81). He then joined the
Mississippi Crime Laboratory, in Jackson, MS, where he was responsible for
directing research and method development for the analysis of abused drugs in
human body fluids and tissue. He directed a major study for the Governor's
Highway safety Commission on the incidence of abused drugs in highway traffic

with his responsibility for directing the GC/MS analysis of priority pollutants
in the Study of Calcassiu-River Lake complex project at McNeese State
University, Lake Charles, LA (1983-84). Following this experience, he Joined the
faculty of the Department of Chemistry and directed the Mass
Spectrometry/Chemical Services Laboratory (CSL) facility at Murray State
University, Murray, KY (1984-88). He then joined the faculty of the University
of Iowa College of Medicine, Department of Preventive Medicine and Environmental
Health (currently College of Public Health), Iowa City, Iowa (1988-2000), where
he was also responsible for directing the Analytical Toxicology Laboratory (ATL).
He taught general chemistry, analytical chemistry, instrumental analysis,
clinical analytical chemistry, and analytical toxicology, and environmental
health. He directed many successful laboratory projects funded by several
federal agencies (e.g. National Institutes of Health, National Cancer Institute,
and the Environmental Protection Agency) and industrial corporations (e.g.
Chrysler-United Autoworkers, Rohm & Haas, Millipore, and the Chemical
Manufacturing Association).
His research has been published in national and
international journals including the Journal of Environmental Toxicology and
Chemistry, Journal of Agromedicine, Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry,
Journal of the Association of Official Analytical Chemists International,
American Journal of Industrial Medicine, and Journal of the Industrial
Hygiene Association.
Dr. Selim has served as a consultant and court expert
witness in forensic and environmental cases. He consulted for state, federal,
private corporations, and (WHO), the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency, and
